Literature Text

wind blows by the whipping post
old wood rots in the sun
the hooves of a galluping horse
line the desert air like a drum
posses trail wanted men
as the ghosts of this town haunt me

rope burns around my neck
covered scars with a bloodstained scarf
i saw god that day
and he looked down on me
smiling
and i looked up at him
when that horse disappeared beneath me
and it was him i abandoned
as i swung until dawn

the devil set me free
come the morning light
free from salvation,
death, and pain
i could hear him in my head
his voice echoed in my ears
as he began to say,

"son, be on your way.
revenge your death, come what may,
no longer can your demons be kept at bay.

i give you now,
10 days to play.
but time is hell in itself
and you've no chance to pray.
10 more to this very day,
my boy, hell will have its pay."

and i stood there
in the dust
alone
and fearless
a so-called "gothic western" series of poems.

this is 1 out of 4.
